“The year was 2016 and I was a first-year student of BBA in Loyola Academy, Hyderabad. I was almost broke, having spent all my money for the month with friends, right before the Christmas vacation. After buying a bus ticket to visit my parents place in Vijayawada, I was left with only 17 Rupees in my wallet. I didn’t want to ask my father as he had already sent me Rs. 6,000 that month for new year shopping and other expenses. I went to a food stall at the bus station to eat something. I looked at the price of each item in the menu, but everything was over 20 Rupees. I turned to leave but the owner called me and asked me what had happened and why I was leaving.
I told him I didn’t have money. Then he said, “Dear, don’t worry about the money. Just eat what ever you want.” I was hesitant at first, but unable to fight my hunger, I ordered vada, idli and a water bottle. I gave him what ever money I had and promised him to return it when I come back. He just smiled back at me and wished me a safe journey. On my return trip after the vacation, I tried to pay him, but he refused to accept the money. Even today, I visit his food stall every time I travel to Hyderabad to meet my cousins. His kind gestures and smile are a reminder that there are still good people in the world who value kindness over money.”
