“I am 46 years old. For the past 13 years, I have been a security guard. I am a native of Vijayawada but I moved to Mumbai in my youth. For over a decade, I was doing errand jobs in the town and later started my own business. It was when I suffered from a major setback in business, I decided to come back to my hometown and take up a permanent job that would give me a regular income. I joined a security firm in 2008 and till now I have worked in all kinds of industries and companies including banks, ATMs, private companies, media houses, and hospitals.
The job of a security guard is tedious and it requires us to be vigilant round the clock. My job is to guard offices and banks apart from which I also look into collecting mails at the gate, maintaining a registry of the people entering and leaving the premises.
I take home a monthly salary of Rs. 16,000. It hardly meets my requirements which include the rent for the house on Ajit Singh Nagar Street, where I live. My son is pursuing his B.tech and I am saving for the education of my younger daughter, who is currently studying intermediate. Though there are many complications, my job has given me a sense of responsibility towards society and people respect me for that.
Yes, things have been extremely difficult in the recent past due to the coronavirus outbreak, but this is a time where we will have to be responsible. As a security guard, I try my best to keep everyone safe. I took complete responsibility and continued my work even during the lockdown period even when my salary was stalled for two months.
Some of my colleagues have left their jobs and gone back to their hometowns during the lockdown. I understand it’s difficult to work especially during a pandemic situation, but if we aren’t going to guard, then who will?”
