“Peppermint candies, bananas, ice golas, roasted peanuts — the joy of watching movies then was unmatched. Those were the best memories of my life. I used to be an ardent Senior NTR fan! Everytime a movie of his released, I would make sure I watch it on the first day, morning show in Krishna Mahal Touring talkies. Back then, the experience of watching a film was different. People from the neighbouring villages would come in bullock carts to watch a movie. They would take time off to do it, even a day off if needed. Today, the cultural relevance of these theatres is lost.
In those days, it was all but impossible to get a movie ticket at the counter. For a film like Adaviramudu(the biggest hit during the 70’s), there were no tickets available for 12 weeks. Can you believe it? The rush for tickets used to cause traffic jams, and it was not unusual for a street guard to be called to control the crowd.
In today’s day and age of multiplexes and online booking, I have noticed how much this city has changed. Recently, someone told me that Krishna Mahal Touring talkies will be renovated into a multiplex. I was quite surprised. That was the place where me and my friends used to watch films. It wasn’t just a movie theater. It was our second home. I still can’t believe that it won’t be the same the next time I go there. But my memories attached to that place will remain forever!”
