“We’ve known each other since childhood. We were neighbours at our village in the West Godavari district. Even though he’s a few years older than me, we grew up together. When we were young, education didn’t hold a lot of importance, so instead of going to school, we preferred going to the play grounds and nobody would stop us. By the time I was 20, all my other friends had started getting involved in wrong activities, but he saved me from taking the wrong track and got me a job at his farm. He became the older brother who I always looked up to. In all these years, we have travelled to many places together and when there’s a function or event in our families, we celebrate it together.
Now that we’re both retired, it feels like we’re back to those carefree childhood days. Every evening, we meet here along with few other friends. We don’t call or follow up with anyone; everyone just shows up. The only change is that outdoor activities have been replaced with conversations about politics and ice candy has been replaced with cups of tea. It’s easy to lose friendships as we grow old, but good friends are hard to come by, so hang on to the ones you have!”
