”My husband and I shifted here from our village to find work and make a better life together. He found a job as a watchman and I, as domestic help. The initial few years went by smoothly but as time went on, he would have to work extra shifts. Sometimes, in order to stay awake at night he would drink heavily, then come home and vent all his frustration at me. When he started getting violent, I decided I would not tolerate domestic abuse.
I told him that this job was taking toll on his overall health and he should return to our village for a few months, while I took care of our family. By then, I was working at many households and was earning enough to support my family. Initially he refused, saying he wouldn’t go to village. But his health was deteriorating and I refused to give up – I stopped giving him money as he had become an alcoholic. Eventually, he realized that his only option was to leave.
Today, he is in the village, while our daughter is staying here with me. She’s 18 and goes to college during the day and help me out with work during the evenings. A lot of people ask me how I manage everything by myself. It is the determination to make my daughter independent and able to fight every situation, that keeps me going!”
