“A few years after my husband was diagnosed with a heart disease, he started falling ill and his business took a hit. I couldn’t help him – I was illiterate and unaware. But I felt like it was my duty to do something to assure him that he wasn’t alone.
Our neighbour was known for her traditional jowar rotis. Every evening, I would watch her prepare them and within a few days, I learnt how to make them. I began making some, once every few days. That’s when I thought of starting a traditional jowar roti business of my own. One evening, a customer landed at my neighbour’s place to buy jowar rotis. She wasn’t around, so I offered to sell the ones I had made. That’s how I earned money for the first time in my life. It was the happiest moment of my life. Initially, I used to sell these rotis for a low price. Slowly, word spread and that’s when I decided to turn my hobby into a proper business. I would get up at 6 am every day, cook for everyone, give my husband medicines, get my son ready and start preparing for my day’s work. I guess that’s what the well-being of your family does: make you feel invincible when their happiness is on the line.”
