“I have been an Auto driver for the last 28 years. My day begins at 7 every morning. Given my line of work, I get to meet different people everyday – some are friendly, some are serious while some are just busy with their work. A few months back I ferried a passenger who I haven’t been able to forget. She was an elderly woman, about 70 years of age. I saw her on the other side of the road when I was taking a small break on a hot afternoon. I noticed that she was trying to hire an auto but was continuously refused by drivers. She tried for more than 20 minutes and I could see that she was getting tired. I took a U-turn and offered her a ride. She told me that her house is just a few minutes away and that’s the reason no one was agreeing to drop her. She was carrying two vegetable bags and was too tired to walk back. When I dropped her, she was very grateful. She also offered me a glass of buttermilk as it was hot outside. Initially I refused, but when she kept insisting, I agreed. She appreciated me for choosing kindness over money. I felt very happy and proud that day. I never met her again but remember that day vividly. I continue to help older people by offering them free rides as I understand the difficulties they face. No matter how busy life gets, there is always time for kindness.”
