“It was when our agricultural land in Mahalrajuvari Palle village stopped reaping profits that my wife and I decided to move to Madanapalle town for better work. It’s been 12 years now since I set up a tea stall there. We had decided early on to educate both our daughters well and I gave my everything to the tea stall to make that possible. My wife lovingly supported me and contributed to the stall through out. My young daughters insist on me resting on the weekends as they take over the stall and do a better job than me! They are young, but incredibly smart and responsible.
We managed our debts carefully and gave our girls girls good education as well. They just finished their class 12 and class 10 respectively. But the onset of coronavirus changed things for us. We had to shut out tea stall and stay at home. We were out of work and consequently out of money. Within a month, we had run out of both savings and resources. The pressure to pay fees for the further education of my children and the repay loans and debts to financers while also running my house hold smoothly and feeding my family sufficiently took us back to our village.
I got to cultivating the ground nut crop, thanks to the rains. However, I didn’t have enough funds to rent oxen or a tractor, there seemed no hope. My wife and daughters insisted on ploughing the land manually. “Nanna, why can’t we plough on our own? Amma, chelli and I, we all are there to help you. Please don’t worry”, my older daughter said. I felt relief, which was immediately washed away by guilt. How could I let my family go through this? But they persisted. They said they wanted to see the crop and enjoy the fruit of hardwork.
The next day onwards, the 4 of us set about ploughing the land and doing other work. It caught people’s attention. Other villagers started clicking pictures and making videos, but I never thought it would reach so far. The footage went from one media channel to another and Mr. Krishnamurthy from a national media channel reached out to me. One thing led to another and Mr. Sonu Sood got in touch with me. The man who we only knew as a reel life villain, became our real life hero! It was surreal to get to talk to him and be promised oxen! Not much later, however, I was in for a surprise when he offered us a tractor instead. Within a day, a blue colored tractor was delivered to us! We were overjoyed. My daughters were waiting to touch it.
The cherry on the cake was that former Chief Minister of AP, Nara Chandra Babu Naidu Garu offered to support my daughters’ education! Indeed, the pandemic has been tough on everyone, but little did I know that one noble soul would change so much for me. I’m deeply grateful to everyone for making this happen!”
