“The circumstances arising from the coronavirus pandamic globally has overnight thrown life and economy out of track.
Everytime I go out to buy the groceries or for shopping, I prefer the most comfortable option – the super markets and malls as I can get all things at the same place. But now I feel all of us as citizens must give a thought to how better we prepare as a society to handle these calamities. As an individual, our buying choices drive the economies. In these times of crisis, we as a community should come together and contribute our part. Small scale business and daily wage earners are hit most. It’s time that we should all come together to support them. If everyone of us resolves to support our local small businesses, be it the roadside vegetable vendors, the small kirana shops, small general stores, eateries, medical shops, it’s our way to build them up. It’s time we go back to our local pindi girnis (flour mills) for the flour.
Afterall when a calamity strikes, it’s the community as a whole that suffers. Yes, there are costs to these. We may not get attractive discounts like the big supermarkets offer when we buy the goods in bulk. Maybe we have to make that extra effort to shop at our traditional markets when corporate supermarket chains offer air-conditioned comfort and convenience. But it’s time we all should make those changes by also following all the precautionary measures like social distancing when we go out. My family already started making these choices as our little way to support small businesses. Let’s all start living the change today!”
