“I was born and brought up in a small village in Kadapa district. We belong to the cobbler community and our ancestors have been in this trade for more than 100 years. My husband and I moved here to the city after our second son was born. He started working in a company as an attender while I was managing the house and taking care of our children. Initially it was working out and we were earning just as much as we needed. But as the years passed by and our children grew up, I realized that we needed more. We didn’t have many options left rather than to go back to my family profession. We wanted to start a business which gave me flexible working hours, so this sounded like the perfect setup for me. That’s when we both decided to open a new shop here in this area with his savings. Every morning, I would wake up early, cook, clean, get my sons ready for school and then come here for work. I wanted them to study hard and work in the offices one day. That’s always my biggest wish and our children worked hard accordingly. My husband would go to office in the morning while I took care of the shop. He would come in the evening after his work and then continue to run the business until evening. Gradually our business picked up and this continued for the last 19 years. Today I feel all our hardwork paid off because my elder son got a job in a good company and my younger son is in his final year of his graduation. They sometimes come here to see if I am okay but I never allowed them to get into this work. Now that my children have grown up and started earning, they ask me to leave this business. But for me, it’s always been a motivation to work hard in life. Till today my biggest achievement has been the fact that I have raised both my children whose future is secure. They are my pride!”
