“I am 66. I have been a sweeper for the last 40 years. I always wanted to do my bit for the society. Unfortunately, I had to give up my education at an early age because my family couldn’t afford it anymore.
I come from a small village in Guntur. When I was young, I used to work in the agricultural fields as a daily wage labourer. Later I moved to Vijayawada for my livelihood. Initially I got this job as a sweeper in college, but as time went by I began to understand that this is a kind of service in itself.
Everyone here in the college calls me Rayudu Tatha and greets me with a warm smile everyday. There’s a girl called Nandu who offers me a meal every single day. I can see my daughter in her.
Although, I know my work doesn’t make my pockets feel heavy but I am quite content with the simple bread and butter it gives me every day.
More than the money, it’s knowing that an entire college is clean because of me that gives me happiness. I know I could easily leave this job and retire, as my sons are in a good position now but that doesn’t seem right to me. I will probably continue doing this for the rest of my life.”
