“The Deepavali I knew as a kid is quite different from how it’s celebrated now. For us, it was a very exciting day right from the new clothes to the gifts and food. Back then, we used to make eco-friendly crackers with coconut and palm leaves. In the evening, we would assemble at the procession and share food.
Being able to get everything ready made now, be it the electric lamps or the firecrackers, has taken the charm out of the festival. Those days, people hardly bought sweets for Deepavali from the big shops. Women always made them at home and shared them among friends and families. For us, Deepavali meant being at home, socializing with relatives, and feeling content and loved.
But today, the charm and excitement of celebrating Deepavali is lost. There is neither the time nor the intent to celebrate the festival traditionally. I just wish I could go back to those good old days!”
