“I wasn’t interested in academics at all, so after my intermediate, I discontinued my education and took up the responsibilities of handling this garage completely from my father. I also joined a certified workshop of Enfield in Kadapa right after my SSC exam. I learned the technicalities and about the different bikes from there.
I spent 2 years in training and also worked under my dad before taking the responsibilities completely.
I open at 9 a.m. and shut shop at 7:30 p.m. except on Sunday, which is a holiday. I repair a wide range of bikes, including old Bullets. However, I don’t repair very old models – 70s/80s. It is extremely difficult to get their spare parts so we stopped repairing the old motorcycles.
Some of my customers believe that old bikes are better. I don’t think so! I feel the only advantage of old bikes is that they are solidly built with metallic bodies, unlike the new bikes which are mostly made of fiber and plastic parts. The recent models have more horsepower and give smoother rides.
When it comes to spare parts, most of the current model bike parts are easy to get in the market. We always stock up the regularly required parts such as tyres, lubricants and cables.
As a mechanic, I always try to work hard and update my knowledge on bikes.
It’s been 11 years since I have been running this place. When I began working here full time, I met a lot of customers who were reluctant to hand over their vehicles as I was young and had to prove my worth every single day. But over the years, the same people refuse to take their vehicles to anyone other than me and I feel proud about it.”
