“I came to Vijayawada from Eluru to do business. I started off by selling peanuts initially and within a few months, I took up selling fruits. Though I have only one push cart, business is good and I don’t think I will ever change since it’s a good trade to practice. I struggle a lot but the hard work has its rewards. In a month, I make enough to put food on my table and take care of the family. Even if there is a loss, we are able to manage and make ends meet.
My day starts at 8 in the morning. I buy fruits from the nearby wholesale fruit market. By 9 a.m., I get the fruits arranged and work till 6 p.m.
Earlier, I used to work till the night but these days, I am closing my stall early because of Covid-19.
I sell all kinds of fruits such as muskmelon, apples, oranges and pomegranates. Customers, who work in the offices nearby, buy more apples and muskmelon so I get most of my profits from these two fruits.
In my free time, I like watching movies. Old movies in particular. My son has a smart phone and I watch Sr. NTR and ANR movies once in a week on his phone when ever he’s at home. I want to buy a smart phone but I still don’t know how to operate it.
I have been here for more than 40 years now and have seen the city and this area change tremendously. When I was new to the city, one could rarely spot cars and motorcycles. But things have changed rapidly within no time. Frankly, I find the much-changed Vijayawada better than the older, quieter Vijayawada. I don’t mind the pollution, heat and the crowds as long as I get customers.”
