“I have been in Kadapa for 20 years. My native place is in Kolar district, Karnataka. I came here to earn a living. Initially, I worked for few years as a daily wage labourer in the construction sector. It was hard work. As I grew older, I have been diagnosed with diabetes and found my strength waning, so I could not continue working in the construction field. I started a small business of selling fruits here in Kadapa six years ago. I have friends from my hometown who also live in this city and they support me when ever I need help. I work from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. all the seven days with out taking any holidays. I live near Old busstand in Sattar colony, so it is easy for me to travel here.I earn about Rs. 400 – 500 a day. These days, because of Covid-19 scare, there are very few takers and about 2-3 pineapples get spoilt in a day, so I have to throw them away. I usually feed them to the cows. I like being my own boss as it is certainly more relaxing than being a dailywage laborer working under extreme conditions. I go to my hometown once in three months. Yes, Kadapa has changed over the years but I am only concerned in earning a living at the moment. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has made things extremely difficult for small businesses like mine but I prefer doing some or the other work because I have a family to feed. I have two children, a son and a daughter. They study in class nine and eight and I am determined to educate them in good institutions in the future. I have never been to school in my life but I will make sure my children get a good education so that they can achieve their dreams in the future.”
