“Growing up, my parents noticed that I was artistically inclined and have always encouraged me to pursue it. With little effort, I was able to win prizes in art competitions in school. However, I chose to pursue Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and worked as a Software Engineer for several years. The work load kept me far away from practicing art.
But one experience that I had in 2012, at the Vincent Van Gogh Art Museum in Amsterdam left me profoundly impacted. I was on resident permit for my husband’s deputation and this trip to Europe made me realise that I had given up what I enjoyed doing the most as a child. It was here that I realised the true capacity that art can have. Within a year, I began exploring art, attending presentations and taking art as my mainstream work. The inspiration and learnings that I received from Bharati Sagar (an eminent artist) who resides in Bangalore also played a huge part in me taking up art as my mainstream work. I feel extremely fortunate that my parents, brother and my husband have all been extremely supportive towards me pursuing art.
During the nation wide lockdown, people in their homes inevitably had to do household chores themselves like sweeping and mopping. It was during this phase of time everyone missed their domestic help. I saw in the news how the doctors, nurses, media, police personnel relentlessly worked during these times. I wanted to particularly focus on the frontline workers like the maids, sweepers, cleaners and vendors who kept their health at risk to keep us all safe. I felt it will be my tribute to these unsung heroes to make a series of paintings of them doing their jobs relentlessly keeping all of us safe while keeping their health at risk. This was my way of saying thank you to these frontline warriors.
In this particular situation, I can only wish that we all realise the true meaning of life and start appreciating the values that life holds. Art itself is a social act and I hope I can bring about some impact through my art work.”
