“In Telugu households ‘Sankranthi’ usually entails arrangement of dolls, called ‘Bommala Koluvu’, set up for these three days.
When we put up the koluvu in our family, we use bommalu handed down from many generations. My grandma used to store them carefully and they were brought out for Sankranthi festival every year.
The idea of putting up bommalakoluvu is symbolically associated with all the gods and goddesses assembled in the house, in a manner of ensuing their blessings and protection for the whole year – till the next harvest.

I learnt a lot about the Bommalakoluvu watching my mother-in-law. I wake up at 5 am on all days of the festival to make arrangements for the pooja in the morning and prepare naivedyam. I spend a lot of time improvising on the arrangements and the evenings are set aside to spend time with guests who drop in to see my koluvu. We come up with a new theme every year and this year it’s Radha Gopalam theme. I remember, one year it was the episode of Ramayana, another it was Mahabharata. My favourite however was the Agriculture based themed on koluvu. Every year we ensure to add few dolls to our existing collection and I hope I’ll be able to pass down this tradition to the future generations too.”
