“I have been a sex worker for 20 years now. Like most women here, I landed here due to shattered family and financial conditions. We were in such a terrible financial crisis that we couldn’t even afford a meal. This is not my native but I had to migrate here. My father died and my mother suffered paralysis so we shifted here, almost 20 years ago. I have never been to school. I was 18-years old when I came here. One of my friends first set her foot into this profession and after seeing her make a living, I followed her. The only thing that mattered to me then was earning money. I used to get 5,000 or 6,000 for two days. That was a huge amount back then. I chose this profession because I can’t go anywhere with kids in hand. My husband too passed away. My daughter is studying in a government school. Every six months, I get a medical check-up done just to be sure of my health and keep myself away from diseases. Nobody talks to me because of the choice of my profession.
Mr. Chandrababu Naidu gave us home and pension and we are thankful for it. I always feel, had I pursued education, my life would have been different. We take women or girls who are widows or orphans as our assistants. We give half of the money we get. We don’t wish this pain and agony to any other girl in this world.”
